The pedagogical implications of AI continue to evolve as these tools and technologies develop, and as instructors and students learn more about them. Informing our pedagogical decisions are a host of considerations related to the opportunities and risks of AI tools for promoting student learning. Join the the Chicago Center for Teaching and Learning  (CCTL), Academic Technology Solutions  (ATS), and the Library  for a series of in-person conversations and presentations over a day and a half as we take stock of the current pedagogical landscape as shaped by AI.

This program will draw on and feature the insights of UChicago faculty and instructors who have been thinking through and experimenting with various approaches to AI tools, from constructive integration to thoughtful restriction of their use in a variety of teaching and learning contexts. Day 1 (9AM – 1:30PM) is structured as a general overview for the current landscape of AI and teaching and learning, including:

  • Pedagogical considerations for the AI landscape
  • Remarks from Emily Lynn Osborn (Associate Professor of History and the College), Chair of the AI and Education faculty advisory committee
  • Academic integrity and communicating AI policies to students
  • An undergraduate student panel discussing AI use and their learning

Day 2 is structured as a full day (9AM – 4:30PM) of faculty panels and workshops focused on pedagogical approaches to teaching without AI and teaching with AI.

Topics will include:

  • Panel discussions featuring UChicago faculty and instructors teaching with and without AI tools
  • Strategies to support AI-literacy skills for students
  • Designing AI-aware assignments and assessments
  • Integrating low/no-tech assessments and activities
  • Using AI tools to support student learning goals

Faculty and instructors from across the University are welcome to attend all or part of the program on either day. Lunch will be provided on both days.

The Teaching in the AI Landscape Canvas site provides a concise, asynchronous overview of the key information and ideas presented at the annual September event. This open-enrollment Canvas site is the product of an ongoing collaboration across  Academic Technology Solutions  (ATS), the Chicago Center for Teaching and Learning  (CCTL),  and the Library  to provide, in one place, a set of ideas and resources to support faculty and instructors in thinking through the teaching and learning implications of artificial intelligence.
