Teaching in the Generative AI Landscape
Wednesday, Sept. 4 & Thursday, Sept. 5 | Regenstein Library 122
The pedagogical implications of generative AI (GAI) continue to evolve as these tools and technologies develop, and as instructors and students learn more about them. Informing our pedagogical decisions are a host of considerations related to the opportunities—and risks—of GAI tools for promoting student learning, equity of access to various tools, legal and privacy issues, and more. Join the Chicago Center for Teaching and Learning (CCTL), Academic Technology Solutions (ATS), and the Library for a series of conversations and presentations over a day and a half as we take stock of the current pedagogical landscape as shaped by AI.
The aims of this program are to provide faculty and instructors:
- Up-to-date, teaching-relevant information about GAI tools
- A pedagogical framework to inform their decisions on how to approach teaching in this context
- A space and structure to receive feedback on syllabi, assignments, policies, and other aspects of teaching potentially affected by GAI tools
This program will draw on and feature the insights of UChicago faculty and instructors who have been thinking through and experimenting with various approaches to AI tools, from constructive integration to thoughtful restriction of their use in a variety of teaching and learning contexts.
Topics will include:
- A teaching-focused primer on GAI tools
- Pedagogical considerations for the GAI landscape
- Approaches to GAI from UChicago instructors (panel discussion)
- Using GAI to support student learning
- Designing AI-resistant assignments
- Academic integrity issues
- Communication and syllabus policy language
There will be time to meet one-on-one with members of the CCTL, ATS, and the Library to workshop materials at the end of each day. Faculty and instructors from across the University are welcome to attend all or part of the program.
