Colloquium on the Evaluation of Teaching

The Colloquium on the Evaluation of Teaching (CET) provides a venue for discussion and reflection on principles and practices for the formative and summative evaluation of teaching. Aimed at faculty and instructors who provide feedback on and evaluate teaching as part of their role at the University, this program facilitates the sharing of approaches and experiences from across the University, informed by practices and frameworks from current literature on teaching and learning. Participants convene for a two-day colloquium to discuss how to think about teaching excellence, approaches to gathering and interpreting evidence of teaching effectiveness, and how to communicate feedback. Over the academic year, participants gather for a series of check-in discussions to share updates and lessons learned as new and revised evaluation strategies are put into practice. As a result of the program, participants are supported in developing and sharing local, meaningful, and evidence-informed practices for evaluating teaching effectiveness, and applying these in their own units.

The CET is facilitated by staff of the Chicago Center for Teaching and Learning (CCTL) and two Senior Instructional Professors while drawing on the insights and experiences of participants. Those who successfully complete the program will receive $500 in professional development funds in recognition of their efforts.

Applications

The Colloquium on the Evaluation of Teaching is open to all faculty and instructors at the University for whom evaluation of teaching is part of their duties. Applicants are selected on the basis of their role in evaluating teaching (and the scope thereof), their goals and interests in the program, and with the aim of assembling a cohort of individuals from a variety of units at the University. Space is limited.

The application for the CET opens in the Winter Quarter for the upcoming academic year. Contact Joe Lampert (josephlampert@uchicago.edu) at any time with questions.
