Karin Maxey joined the CCTL in May 2023 as the Assistant Director of Pedagogy. Her role involves conceptualizing, planning, and carrying out programming for faculty and instructors on a wide range of topics in teaching and learning, and working with individual instructors for teaching observations, midcourse student feedback sessions, and consultations. With the Director of Pedagogy, she guides the Exploratory Teaching Groups, plans and leads the Teaching Fellows Pedagogy Program, and coordinates Faculty and Instructor Reading Groups with Associate Pedagogy Fellows. She also offers workshops, writes website and newsletter resources, and assists with other programming in the center.
In 2014, she earned her Ph.D. in German Studies and Second Language Pedagogy from the University of Texas at Austin. From 2014 to 2020, Karin developed, revised and taught all levels of German courses, First-Year Writing for Multilingual Writers, and Language Pedagogy on the faculty at Vassar College and Northeastern University. During that time, in addition to significant teaching responsibilities, she gained experience with educational development, becoming involved with the teaching centers on campus. In 2020, she joined UChicago as the Language Pedagogy Specialist in the Chicago Language Center, where she offered curriculum design workshops and worked one-on-one with language instructors. Her academic interests lie in curriculum design and development, classroom equity, second language learners’ reading development, and working with novice language learners, but she reads widely.
She is excited to be part of the CCTL team and to continue broadening her understanding on teaching and learning in higher education from working with faculty and instructors at UChicago.
