Karin Maxey joined the CCTL in May 2023 as the Assistant Director of Pedagogy. Much of her work lies in conceptualizing, planning, and carrying out programming for faculty and instructors on a wide range of topics in teaching and learning. With the Director of Pedagogy, she guides the Exploratory Teaching Groups, conducts Teaching Observations, and plans the Spring Symposium. She also offers workshops, conducts mid-course reviews and teaching consultations, and assists with other programming in the center.
In 2014, she earned her Ph.D. in German Studies and Second Language Pedagogy from the University of Texas at Austin. From 2014 to 2020, Karin taught all levels of German courses, First-Year Writing for Multilingual Writers, and Language Pedagogy on the faculty at Vassar College and Northeastern University. During that time, she gained experience with faculty development, becoming involved with the teaching centers on campus. In 2020, she joined UChicago as the Language Pedagogy Specialist in the Chicago Language Center, where she offered curriculum design workshops and worked one-on-one with language instructors. Her academic interests lie in curriculum design, classroom equity, second language learners’ reading development, and working with novice language learners. She is excited to be part of the CCTL team and to keep gaining new perspectives on teaching and learning in higher education.
