Joe leads the CCTL and collaborates with faculty, academic leadership, and campus partners to advance and support teaching and learning at the University. He has been at the University of Chicago and at the CCTL since 2015. 

Joe has held a number of teaching and pedagogical development roles that contribute to his perspective on teaching and learning in higher education. Before coming to UChicago, he was a faculty member and award-winning teacher of political science at Portland State University, and he has held positions in the teaching and learning centers at Northwestern and Yale University. His pedagogical development work has involved designing and leading programs on topics such as course design, inclusive pedagogy, active student engagement, assessment and feedback, the pedagogy of discussion, and teaching in the AI landscape, among other areas, and at UChicago he has convened campus-wide conversations on pedagogical issues related to the Core curriculum, experiments in grading, and generative AI. Joe teaches in the area of political theory and the history of political thought, including in the Social Sciences Core sequence Classics of Social and Political Thought, as well as graduate courses in higher education pedagogy. He received his BA from NYU, and his PhD in political science from Yale.
