Lunchtime reading groups foster dialogue and pedagogical community among faculty and instructors, as well as graduate students. The CCTL offers two reading groups per year, holding separate meetings for faculty/instructors and graduate students. Participants receive a copy of the book, which serves as the basis for discussion, questions, and sharing strategies at the book group meetings. Join us in Winter 2024 to discuss David Clark and Robert Talbert’s Grading for Growth, an overview of alternative assessment strategies.
After taking a critical look at traditional grading systems, which they argue prioritize grades and scores over learning, the authors review standards-based grading and specifications grading systems, discussing their advantages and disadvantages, and exploring how they can be partially or fully implemented into different sizes and types of courses. With a range of cross-disciplinary examples, the book should serve as inspiration and motivation for anyone who is re-evaluating their approach to assessment.
