Struggling to compose a Statement of Teaching Philosophy? You can get help with this tricky genre that many colleges and universities request as part of the job application process.
This essay is your first opportunity to display what you do in the classroom, how you approach teaching in your discipline, and how you engage learners. The CCT offers half-hour appointments that allow you to receive feedback on a draft you have produced, answer questions you have about what to include, or simply get a clearer understanding of how to represent your current teaching on paper.
If you are interested in scheduling an appointment with Associate Directors Joe Lampert or Kiki Zissimopoulos, please click here. Directions to the CCT are available here.
Please come to the meeting having read O'Neal, Meizlish and Kaplan's "Writing a Statement of Teaching Philosophy for the Academic Job Search" and the rubric for statements of teaching philosophy (downloadable in the right hand sidebar) and with a draft of your teaching statement.
The Chicago Center for Teaching also offers the following types of consultation appointments for graduate students and postdocs who would like individual feedback on teaching related documents: teaching portfolio consultations, course design/syllabus consultations, and teaching position/fellowship cover letter consultations. You can sign up for these appointments by logging into the GRAD Gargoyle here. Please read the details below to ensure that you have the necessary information and any required materials prepared in advance.
