A. Teaching Chicago Undcrgraduates

University of Chicago undergraduates are a talented, intellectually engaged, frequently over-committed group of students. Students with financial aid (nearly half the student body) will almost certainly be employed as a stipulation of their aid packages, along with many who, although they are not on aid, will be expected by their families to contribute to college expenses. Other demands on students' time will come from the more than 300 student groups, athletic teams, performance organizations, and volunteer activities in which students participate and which contribute to their personal growth and success.

Most high school students, accustomed to the rhythm of a semester system, find that adjusting to the quarter system is a challenge that requires changing study habits and improving study skills. As advisers assist new students in planning their schedules they will help students take into account the demands of employment and cocurricular activities on their time, the pace of the quarter system, the work loads of specific courses, and students' preparation for specific courses. Instructors can help students prepare for the flow of the quarter by providing students, before second week, with a clear schedule of examinations and due dates for papers, assuming a prearranged schedule is otherwise be consistent with course goals.
